Familiar Spirits and the Long Island Medium

There is a show on television called “The Long Island Medium” about a woman who talks to the dead spirits of the passing. I have not personally watched this show, nor do I intend to, however, I have seen enough media promoting it to be concerned. Then recently, while channel surfing, I came across an upcoming interview with her ready to start.....and I decided to watch it. 5 minutes into the interview, my spirit was jumping all over the place and the Lord was filling me with plenty of ammo in His Word! Hence, this blog entry was born....

The Old Testament warns against consulting with mediums and psychics in several instances. These practices are considered detestable to the Lord. Here are just a few of those instances:

Deuteronomy 18:10-13, “Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God.”

Leviticus 19:31, “'Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.”

Leviticus 20:27, “Men and women among you who act as mediums or psychics must be put to death by stoning. They are guilty of a capital offense.”

Are psychic experiences of talking with the dead real? Yes, I believe they can be very real, but they are not true experiences of talking with dead people. The Bible considers these experiences to be associated with deceiving spirits, demonic forces, angels of light or counterfeits for the true Spirit of God. Otherwise known as “familiar spirits.” They are called that because the demons take on the “appearance” of people “familiar” to those seeking contact with a deceased member. An illusion. A very DANGEROUS illusion. The warnings that God gave His people back then still apply to all of us in this present day and age. The Bible says that God does not change, and this includes all of His ways and all of His warnings. The past, present and future belong to God! The trouble is that most Christians are not aware of what some of these warnings are because they haven't spent much time reading and studying from the Old Testament. And, some Christians are deceived easily by believing these “familiar spirits” are from our Holy Father by listening to a few chosen key words the demons use through the medium. That is due in part to a very familiar “Christian” movement called the “New Age Movement.” It's a mish mosh of all kinds of nonsensical practices that are NOT scripturally based. Be wary of this movement and more so of it's false teachings.

Because God is very jealous and possessive over His own children, He wants all of us to come directly to Him if we have any problems with our future, or what He might have in store for us in our future. People are consulting fortunetellers, psychics, horoscopes, and ouija boards for guidance and information on what the future may hold for them. This is ONLY accomplished by the demons and evil spirits, and NOT by God the Father! The Bible says that it is the job of the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and teach us all things in this life. We need to seek the truth out in His Word that He left for us! God wants to be the Guide and Teacher of our lives. He doesn't want us going to others to seek out this type of divine guidance because of His intensely jealous nature. He warns us against this practice as a protection for our spiritual well being as well. The Bible says that there is only one God – and only He knows all things about  us, which includes all of our past, present, and future.

These fortunetellers, or mediums, get their ability to have partial knowledge about you and your present situation directly from demons! This should alarm even the most staunch of people. No human has the supernatural ability to know what is going to happen to you in the future, or anything about you in your present condition if they have never met you before. If they do seem to have some kind of personal information or special knowledge about you that could only be supernaturally picked up, then that knowledge is being transmitted to them by demons. Period. Once you step into the fortuneteller’s office, you are stepping behind enemy lines. These people are operating under the direct influence, and direction, of demonic spirits. At this point, if God should so allow it, you have now given the demons the full legal right to be able to follow you home. And from there, the demons will set up shop in your house and they will then start to attack both you and possibly the other members of your family. This is NOT something anyone should desire for themselves, or anyone they love and cherish, nor should tamper with.

These 5 verses are giving all of us major warnings from the Lord on what specific areas of the occult that we are to avoid like the plague. To be forewarned is to be properly armed!

Deuteronomy 18:10-13, “There shall not be found among you anyone who makes His son or daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures up spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you. You shall be blameless before the Lord your God.” 

Deuteronomy 4:19, “And take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them and serve them …” 

Leviticus 19:31, “Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.” 

Leviticus 20:6, “And the person who turns after mediums and familiar spirits, to prostitute himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people.” 

1 Chronicles 10:13, “So Saul died for His unfaithfulness which he had committed against the Lord because He did not keep the word of the Lord, and also because He consulted a medium for guidance.” 

The extremely strong wording being used by the Lord in these verses show us that this is  the maximum intensity kind of warning being given to His people, and under no circumstances are we to engage, experiment with, or even try out for one time any of these occult activities. The above verses are telling us that God the Father means serious business on this type of activity. They say that pursuing guidance from soothsayers, mediums, the stars, sun and the moon (astrology) are abominations before the Lord, and that you risk having Him set His face personally against you for engaging in these types of evil activities.

Now here are some of the specific occult areas that we are to completely stay away from. Every single one of these occult areas are major door openers to the dark side where Satan and his demons roam, and are anxiously waiting for you to enter. You are gambling and taking a very big chance that you will not draw demons in on you and your entire household if you decide to  experiment, even for one time, with any of these particular activities: 

Fortunetelling of any kind such as palm reading, crystal ball gazing, numerology, or seeing psychics, Tarot Cards, Ouija Boards, Automatic Writing, Seances and any involvement with mediums or spiritists,  Astrology and any form of horoscopes, Hypnotism,  Transcendental Meditation or any type of Far Eastern Meditation, Crystals, Runes, Witchcraft, Satanism, Voodoo, Channeling, Reincarnation, Astral projection, ESP, Dungeons and Dragons, WarCraft, New Age Movement techniques and activities or Necromancy. 

Now, to the interview I watched with the Long Island Medium. As I watched her manipulate the grieving souls, I noticed she wasn't giving specifics of anything. She was ASKING generic questions while watching for a specific response and actions from the unsuspecting. Once she honed in on that, she went for it. There were times she hit on a very sensitive nerve and I knew it was a demonic spirit. This woman, as is the case with many other televised mediums and spiritists, is making huge amounts of money preying on the weak and grieving while leading them into a world full of darkness! I've noticed with each “medium” they use the word “spiritual” as often as they can. They want to make it “appear” as though this is harmless and is from God. However, they NEVER use the word CHRISTIAN, JESUS CHRIST, GOD THE CREATOR or SAVIOR. Why? Because they aren't allowed to speak those names because they are being guided by Satan himself! He will only ELUDE to those references so all he gives his “vehicles” permission to use are generic “spiritual” terms. Satan's goal is to bring in as many of God's people as possible, to deceive, to conquer and to make them stumble. 

The more I watched her, the more my spirit jumped! These people truly believe that they have this supernatural power to speak with the dead and to see the “spirits” of the deceased. They do possess a power in a sense, and they do speak with the dead....but it isn't the actual dead person they are speaking to, it's the “familiar spirit” that the demons take the form of that is being spoken to. Fortunetellers are all over the TV and newspapers, and most people really don't know the real dangers associated with engaging and experimenting in these types of activities. They are like lambs being led to the slaughter, due in part, to their lack of knowledge on these issues! These are all gateway practices. By that I mean, these and all of the practices I've listed above, are gateways to the occult, to the dark side, to the demonic spirits. Some doors are never meant to be open!

If you have inadvertently opened one or more of these doors, it's not too late! If you are a born again Christian, then there is a 4 step process that needs to be done in order to deliver you from the demons and restore order back into your lives. 

1) Confess the specific activity before God as a sin and ask for His forgiveness.

2) Renounce the specific activity before God and tell Him that you will never, ever participate in that activity again. Cover yourself with the blood of Jesus Christ and say it out loud.

3) Burn or throw away all books, objects, or items associated with this activity.

4) Directly engage with the demons by speaking out loud to the them, telling them they no longer have any legal right to stay attached to you since the occult activity has now been fully confessed and fully renounced before God the Father. Then command them to now leave you in the name of Jesus Christ and for them to never, ever come back on you again.

If you are not a born again Christian, then you must first become a born again Christian by receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. Repenting of all of your sins, asking for His forgiveness and accepting Jesus into your heart! Then you would follow the four (4) steps above for your deliverance of demonic bondage. 

There are no answers in the occult that can give you peace or everlasting life, nor speak of the Truth of our Lord and Savior. The New Testament tells us in John 14:26, “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” And in John 16:13, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come.” The Bible teaches that spiritual guidance should be sought from God alone through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. He has provided everything we need for this life in his Word. Isaiah 8:19 tells us, “When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?” In closing, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “(v16) All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, (v17) that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
