Conviction or Condemnation...Knowing the Difference

When I was a new Christian, I always got this confused, yet I knew that confusion is not of the Lord. That should have told me something in my spirit but instead, I would have to experience this difference on my own. It took me some years before understanding fully, what these were and how I could tell the difference between the two. Let's explore some of those differences by first turning to the inspired Scriptures and hear what God has to say about them.

Romans 8:1 says, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Condemnation is either from Satan or our sinful hearts. Conviction is a gift from the Holy Spirit. Then again in John 3:17-18, "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. (18) He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Begotten Son of God."

Breaking Free from Condemnation
It is important for those of us who are born again Christians, to know that there is a huge difference between the conviction of the Holy Spirit and the condemnation of the enemy of our faith, because it can affect how we approach life. It can dictate whether we remain in bondage or we find our freedom! Let there be no confusion here. The Holy Spirit works to convict us to push away from the ensnarement of sin (doing what is wrong) and move our hearts and minds toward God in freedom. The condemning spirit of the enemy of our faith, that is Satan, works to push us away from God in shame, guilt and condemnation, so we are more prone in hopelessness, to continue to do what we should NOT. To help you further to discern the difference between the conviction of the Holy Spirit and the condemnation of the devil, I'm going to share with you some principles, examples and scriptural references that will surely empower you in your spiritual and personal life.

1) Condemnation causes us to turn away from God in fear, dread, and shame. Conviction causes us to come to God and freshly place our faith in the perfect life and death of Christ.
2) Condemnation leads us to believe that we’ll never change and that we aren't worthy of God's love. Conviction gives us hope that, even though we sinned, God is still at work in us.
3) Condemnation paralyzes faith for change, keeping us in bondage. Conviction bears the fruit of faith for change, freeing us to fully grow in the love of God.
4) Condemnation causes us to wallow in despair and self-pity. Conviction leads to God-centered hope.
5) Condemnation sees God as an angry judge who is waiting in the shadows to strike at any moment. Conviction sees God as a loving Father who disciplines his children through His love for us.
6) Condemnation is inward, self-focused, and always dwelling on the fact that we have sinned. Conviction is outward, God-focused, and always dwelling on the fact that we have sinned against God.

The tone of the enemy's voice is always going to be accusatory, nagging and mocking as a way to generate fear, shame and confusion in order to project rejection. He's the father of lies, deceitful and pretends to know what's best for you. John 8:44 confirms this, “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” The tone of the Holy Spirit is the Loving voice of our Father, imploring, beseeching and urging our return to Him …as we’re told in Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me all ye who are weary and heavy laden…” And in John 12:32 where Jesus says, “…I will draw all men to myself.”

“Remember all of your past” says the enemy: The devil replays, and replants, the past memories of our sin, guilt and shame. He draws up accounts of your past sins, failures and offenses that are under the blood because the ONLY thing he can do to condemn us in our flesh is to make us rehash our past. He can't do anything new so he resorts to replaying our past transgressions. “FORGET YOUR PAST!” is the Holy Spirit speaking: The Holy Spirit tells you your sin is forgotten, cleansed, removed, covered and put away, never to be held against you again. (see: John 1:29; Psalm 103:12; 1 John 1:7-9; Psalm 51:7; Micah 7:19; Hebrews 10:17; Philippians 3:13; Matthew 12:31; Psalm 34:7-8) Once we have believed on the sacrifice of the Son of God, in His birth, death and resurrection, repented of our sins, and accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, then as Jesus said at the cross, “It is finished!”

The Holy Spirit Speaks
The enemy works to isolate you: Suggestions are made to you that cause you to withdraw from other Christians and he works on you to think that they reject you. In your isolation, you then feel lonely, hurt, unworthy, rejected by others and angry. 2 Corinthians 4:4 says, “...whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel if the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.” He works to divide you from others. THE HOLY SPIRIT DRAWS YOU INTO FELLOWSHIP: The Spirit sends others to minister to you in love — thus you learn to accept others words of encouragement and to appreciate one another and their ministry to you (see: 1 John 1:3; Hebrews 12:1-2; Hebrews 10:24-25). He sends others to open your eyes to turn from darkness and into light so you can receive forgiveness (see: Acts 26:18). He works to unite us in love with other believers. Luke 22:31-32 reminds us of this, “And the Lord said, “Simon! Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. (32) “But I have prayed for you, that your faith not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”

There are many more examples of their differences, but I wouldn't have enough time, nor space, to continue in this study. So, what, then, is the purpose of the enemy in accusing and condemning us? It's to draw us away from God and to make us helpless, to ourselves and to others, while making us useless to God and others! What is the purpose of the Holy Spirit convicting us? It's to draw us to God and to each other and to help us to be all we can be! He wants us to stay close to His bosom, follow His light and walk on His path so that we can be of use to His people as well as to become who He wants us to be! As you go with God, you will push away that which you shouldn't be holding on to, releasing the strongholds and embracing that which you should hold onto through His guidance —with His strength, not your own. The emphasis is that we’re to study all that God is in the Bible. We need to keep in mind that God is strong and He does not tolerate sin. He is our judge, but He is a fair judge who disciplines us because He loves us, always wanting to draw us to Himself  —not push us away from Himself.

  4. My mentor suggested I do a study of conviction vs condemnation since I was struggling with some guilt, not knowing where it was coming from. I found this blog. This has been extremely helpful in lighting up the truth. It is the enemy that has been bringing up my past, not the Holy Spirit. Now I can cast it down in the name of Jesus Christ because my sins of the past have already been wiped away by His blood. Thank you for this blog and God Bless you.

    1. PTL! Thank you for sharing this with me. We have all struggled with this and once I fully understood and was led by the Holy Spirit that it wasn't Jesus that CONDEMNED me, I was freed! It IS through His shed blood and there is much power through it! I couldn't reply to you privately since you posted as anonymous, but God Bless you in His Perfect Will and continue to seek His face! Much prayers to you in continuing to cast down the guilt (or anything else) the enemy brings up! It's been forgiven!!!! In the name of JESUS!

  5. Im so grateful I came across this today. This is something I struggle with daily. I got so lost in the world that I almost died from drugs and my life style. JESUS is the one that saved me.
I have an ongoing battle with my sister about this and our past. Growing up we didnt have the greatest child hood. Ok.. but really were grown now we are wives and mothers. Shes seems to think that digging and digging is goimg to resolve things. Even going back to viking days. Really our children are listening every second. We need to be learning and teaching more about JESUS and feeding less of satan... I really need prayer and more prayer for our relationship. I love her but ive had my share of the past and there is no Glory there. Please be praying♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

  6. I am so thankful that the Lord led you to this post because He knew exactly what you needed and where you could find it! I am praising along with you that you listened to the voice of our Savior calling you out from the darkness of the drugs and lifestyle you were living! Satan wants you to keep living in the past, reliving the days of darkness so that you can fall away! Remember, though, Satan has already been defeated and you are healed by Jesus' stripes! You are right about there being no Glory in living or reliving the past! Continue to seek His face, and in prayers and supplication, pray without ceasing! He will mend what has been broken or fractured and will help you with your relationship with your sister! I will keep you in prayers! God Bless You in His Perfect Will!

  9. Please remember me in prayer, I have lived in condemnation most of my life. I received Jesus as my Savior at the age of 8 or so . as i grew older I went out into the world but I never forgot the LORD. I returned to him over and over again but the guilt of my past and feelings that I was just not good enough have held me all these years in bondage. My husband passed away almost 9 months ago.. I have isolated myself from everyone. I only leave the house to buy food when I need it... all i have done is cry and yes some of it is from missing my husband but the biggest part is the guilt I feel for the things I did to him and the things i said and didn't say, I want to be free and happy again... I know this is not of the LORD but I can't seem to get past it... I am to the point i want to throw up, I am starting to lose hope that God has a future for me... I know that Jesus loves me and that he means only good for me... but I just can't see why he would love me... I can't feel anything by sadness and pain... please , please, pray for me.... Jesus is my only hope and I long to serve him in joy and peace with a fully believing heart... ty and gbu.

    1. Oh my...what your going through is what I'm going through except my husband is still here. My fear one day is when he is gone I will feel the same guilt that you feel. I think your story will help more people than you know. Because of what your going through I will try to treat my husband like it's our last day together. In the meantime I will pray for you that God will heal you and show you his love and mercy and that you ARE forgiven and not condemned!

  10. I will gladly remember you in prayer! I'm terribly sorry for your loss and for the struggles that you are going through right now. Please remember that once you've truly repented and asked for forgiveness of the sins that you have felt guilt over, they have been forgiven. If they keep coming up to harass you, it's because the enemy knows they will make you feel exactly as you are right now...NOT WORTHY of GOD'S LOVE! That's the enemy's lies! You said you never forgot the Lord even when you went out into the world and let me assure you, He has not forgotten you either! He IS waiting for your heart to fully return and serve Him. I know you are struggling with getting past your regrets, and part of the grieving process is regrets....it's hard for our human side to not to have regrets for what we haven't said or done or what we have said and done, once our loved ones have passed over! During this time, though, it is very important to find comfort in His love and His arms and seek out His promises to comfort you and guide you in His word! Try not to isolate yourself and allow your loved ones who are still with you to be there for you! We are not designed to be alone during these times. You could easily fall into a deep depression so reach out to someone!! I pray you have a church family, but if you don't, it might be a good time to find a good, solid Bible teaching church to be with other sisters and brothers in Christ! No matter what you've done, no matter what you've said, Jesus Loves you because you have been born again and His blood is covering you. You said you didn't understand why He would, but HIS love is unconditional! HIS love is something far beyond anything we have ever known here on this earth! YOU ARE WORTHY!!!! He is there with you right now and as long as you cry out to Him, He will deliver you through this pain and sadness! Don't lose hope that He has a future for you, because He does!!! He isn't going to give up on you just because you have struggled! That isn't the loving character of our Creator God!!! Read Psalms....I've always turned to that wonderful book whenever I've needed encouraged and comfort!!! Please don't let the enemy convince you of his horrible lies and remember that you CAN be delivered from the bondage you are in right now! You just need to ask, repent and renew! God Bless you and keep you!!! And you will be in my prayers!

    2. This explanation on condemnation or conviction really shed some light on what i was struggling with. Bless God. Thank you. Cause their is someone who keeps critizing me about the things of God and every thing i do they critisize. So i came up with this question. Is it correction or critisism. Cause everytime i would try to adjust to whatever comment was made. Then the things of the pass keep coming up and am really crying out to God saying WHATS WRONG with me. But then i would hear the word "the devil is an accuser of the brethren. So this reaally helps.

      Delete
    3. Hi anonymous! I'm thankful this shed some light for you in your struggles! The devil definitely is an accuser of the brethren but I also pray that you will be able to discern between when you are being corrected as opposed to being criticized. If it's correction it'll be done in love and will be biblical! Criticism is meant to tear one down which is the enemy's favorite pastime! The enemy loves the past because that's where our fault lies. He can ONLY bring up our past because that's all he knows! I will pray you are free from that criticism so God can continue to work in your life! May God Bless you in His Perfect Will!

  14. I have been a Christian for more than 20 years. It is clear to me I am condemning myself which explains this bondage, hopelessness and dwellings of guilt constantly.I read my bible and pray every day but I remain stationary and I don't feel like I'm growing in the Lord. How can I overcome this bondage? Thanks, Tammy

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hi Tammy! You describe what many are expressing in their walk and as I've mentioned in my post, the enemy, our adversary, the devil is the one that condemns us! He'll lie to us for as long as it takes to succeed in holding us down AND away from what the Lord Jesus Christ wants for us all....freedom! One of the first things I'd advise is to ask the Lord to break the bondage of condemnation no matter how long it may take! Ask Him to replace your hopelessness with His hope and JOY! Read Psalm whenever you feel those feelings and ask Him to reveal His will to you. Repent of those feelings that are holding you back so the Lord has room to fill that void up! Much is waiting for you but FIRST you MUST stop believing the lies of the enemy! Jesus WILL help you overcome! Guilt is the enemy's pathetic tool to snag Christians because it works IF we allow it! But we mustn't. Satan and his minions and his lies have been defeated! Conviction is MUCH different than condemnation and it gives us a different feeling as well! That's why I feel the Lord led me to write this post so Christians KNOW the difference and CAN find their freedom IN Christ Jesus! Tammy, continue to pray, seeking His face and receiving His TRUTH and surrender fully to Him! I'll pray for you and I'm sure others who read these comments will also! May God Bless You in His Perfect Will and may God keep you and protect you!

  16. Ive been struggling with a certain issue for over two years now. It keeps me up every night and it's all I think about all the time. It's trying to go back and fix my wrongs and make peace with my past. It's caused bad anxiety in me and I don't know if it's God or the enemy. I've asked a pastor and I've asked Christian friends their thoughts. They have all said its part of my past that has been forgiven and to give it to God. Why can't I seem to do that? Why does it say in and day out bother me?

    1. Hi Danika! If you have truly repented and have asked for God's forgiveness for those wrongs then they have been washed clean! I'm assuming you are a born again believer in Christ and as such, this anxiety and lack of sleep is not coming from Jesus! The enemy is nipping at your heels to CONDEMN you and to get you to remain in bondage. This is how the enemy works and he wants to win so the MORE you call on the name of Jesus and not believe the lies of the enemy, the easier it's going to get for you! Lay it all down at the foot of the Cross, at the feet of Jesus. Ask HIM to take your doubts away and to fill you with HIS peace! Proclaim out loud that you have been forgiven and Satan has been defeated! God doesn't want you losing sleep and being filled with anxiety! Nor does He want you to be focused ON those wrongs! KNOW they are forgiven and the enemy is trying to rattle your Faith! Don't let the devil win this battle! Remember, God is a God of love, peace, forgiveness, beauty and joy! He wants that for HIS children! Satan wants to condemn you for your PAST to take your eyes off of all that God has for you NOW and in your future! Pray daily for those thoughts to be replaced with God's truth and peace! We'll be praying too! May God bless you in HIS perfect will and keep you close!

  19. Thanks and Praise the Lord Jesus Christ! I came across this blog and it hit me right on my heart and head. I am about to give a Talk about Guilt and Repentance in a week's time of this writing. The Holy Spirit leads me to this inspiring thread. My dilemma right now is how can give an inspiring message to the participants when Me, their speaker, is not "walking the talk." There is a 3rd party in my married life who is threatening to spill the beans to my wife and my whole family if I cut~off my un-Godly relationship with her. She is capable to do this with the ease of social media network free online. I need guidance of God and Holy Spirit how to severe this ugly past without totally ruining my beautiful loving family. Help me God!

  20. Thanks and praise God for leading me to this very inspiring and enlightening sharings. It was a timely search to supplement my upcoming talk to our community about Guilt and Repentance. How can me, the annointed Speaker, will be walking the talk where in fact I am sinful in the eyes of our Lord Jesus Christ having this relationship outside marriage. I had several opportunities to cut off this relationship but the other woman is threatening to "spill the beans" to my wife and family. With the ease of doing this through social media, there is truth in her threat of doing so. With your prayers and guidance, how can i correct my wrong doings?
