And in the Days of Noah

In Matthew 24:37-41, it says, “But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man (38) For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, (39) And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. (40) Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. (41) Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.” This passage is often cited by Biblical scholars and writers as a warning of the coming of the end of times and should be a condition to alert us of the coming of the Lord.

Some people focus on how “normal” things will be right before His coming and neglect it's warning of God's intentions. They are unaware of the “calm before the storm.” If God wanted us to focus on the normalcy of the days right before the great flood, He would have said so! Instead, He gave us a metaphor of  “in the days of Noe.” To Noah and his family, however, it was a clear warning of the coming of the time when God would bring His creation to an abrupt end. When we look at the story of Noah in Genesis 6:1-13, we find how the condition of the world was vexing to God, and while He was looking down upon His creation from His throne in Heaven, He saw how corrupt it had become! It was everything opposite of what God intended when His hands created it! I can only imagine how He felt after seeing how everything He created was “good” being corrupted with vile and evil events. Let's take a look at Genesis 6:1-13 and refresh ourselves on the power of His words.

“(1) And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, (2) That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. (3) And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. (4) There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. (5) And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. (6) And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. (7) And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repent me that I have made them. (8) But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. (9) These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. (10) And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (11) The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. (12) And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. (13) And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.” 

The Dark and Evil Days

God's heart was full of sorrow brought forth in those days. When we look at this passage in depth, we see that giants, (the Nephilim) walked the whole face of the earth as angels and mated with the humans that God created. This unnatural union corrupted the seed of the human flesh that He created, and in part, was the reason for God's destruction of what He created for the good of us. It was the age of the Nephilim, the age of Nimrod, the age of men of renown. The Nephilim were not only giants in size, but also, had superhuman strength, knowledge and might! Not what God intended and definitely not what He was going to allow by these fallen angels who rebelled against Him! On a side note, this group of fallen angels were dealt with differently as stated in Jude 1:6, “And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these He has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.” These angels are still in the darkness in everlasting chains awaiting their miserable judgment! God must have felt this group of angels who departed their proper dwelling places were much more of a threat to His creation than the other set of fallen angels who are permitted to roam the earth even today! Thank God for His protection!  

The Great Pyramids

And with these “mighty men” could it be possible that this was a specific time when many of the great ancient pyramids of Egypt were constructed, or the Sphinx or even Stonehenge? It would make sense to me because to this day, there really is NO other explanation. There are many recorded "mysterious" constructed structures that can't be explained but somehow, they seem and appear to have been constructed during the days of the Nephilim. Before I proceed, a little information about the Nephilim. The term translated “giant” is from the Hebrew word “Nephilim,” and literally means “the fallen ones” (from the verb nephal, to fall) In the Septuagint translation; the term used was “gigantes” or earth born. They are also called “Hag Bibborim” the mighty ones, or hero, or chief-man.” At the Jewish Virtual Library, found at this link, http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/judaica/ejud_0002_0015_0_14693.html  they are described as follows: “NEPHILIM (Heb. נְפִילִים), a race of giants said to have dwelt in pre-Israelite Canaan (Num. 13:33). Genesis 6:1–2 relates that the "sons of gods," i.e., divine or angelic beings, took mortal wives; verse 4 continues, "It was then, and later too, that the Nephilim appeared [lit., were] on earth–when the divine beings cohabited with the daughters of men, who bore them offspring. They were the heroes [Heb. gibborim] of old, the men of renown." This could mean that the Nephilim were contemporaneous, but not identical, with the offspring of divine beings and earthly women, who were called gibborim (so, e.g., Morgenstern, in HUCA 14 (1939), 85ff.). The above translation, however, follows an ancient tradition in equating the Nephilim and the gibborim as offspring of the union of *angels and mortals.” This was pre-flood. And post flood, we find in Numbers 13:32-33, where the Twelve Spies report that they have seen fearsome giants in Canaan: "And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, "The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them." 

The flood wiped out the giants but shortly after the flood they returned and spread all throughout the Promised Land. Not only did the giants return after the flood, as referenced in Numbers 13:32-33, but they were major enemies of God and His chosen nation, Israel, for centuries. For a time the Nephilim were all over ancient Middle East wreaking havoc, attacking God’s people while creating spiritual practices, luring humanity in worshiping Satan and his angels. The fact that they were giants, is also proof in and of itself that they were superhuman. But these giants were evil and born of corrupted, Satanic angels, they dominated the Earth, filling it with violence. It is also interesting to note that the Bible calls them “men of renown.” The Hebrew word here, shem, refers to being famous and legendary. It's almost as though the Bible indicates when we read and hear of legends of the “demigods,” titans or legendary mythological heroes who were part “god,” that this is who those “myths” were referring to. Those were the mythological ‘men’ of superhuman might, ability and strength. In addition to causing violence and sin in the world, the Nephilim were also corrupting the human bloodline. Satan is the cause of this and due to his jealous nature of wanting to BE God, he wanted to corrupt the seed of God's creation and “create” his own kind. But his MAIN reason was to corrupt the seed of the woman so Satan could prevent the birth of the Messiah, who of course, had to be human and be born to a pure, uncorrupted virgin. Satan wants the Word of God to fail but he knew that in addition to the woman, God prophesied that Satan would also have a “seed” (Genesis 3 v. 15). So basically, the Nephilim were an attempt to hijack God’s plan of salvation for humanity. But praise be to God and His Son Jesus, Satan FAILED! Why? Because God is mightier and is TRUTH! He spoke it and it is done!


What was the purpose of the flood in Noah's day?

The flood served 3 chief purposes: 1) To destroy the Nephilim giants. 2) To punish the angels who committed the illicit relations with women and make an example of them so that no other angels would ever attempt this again and 3) to save humanity from certain destruction. Much to the contrary of belief, this was not an angry God acting out and dealing with, and punishing, humanity because it was sinning too much. After all, today’s society is just as corrupt and depraved, if not far worse than any era before us! There were far more complex issues going on in the days of Noah then just humans sinning. Much more than the “over-reaction by an angry God” as many skeptics, and non-believers, like to claim, the flood was God’s way of preserving the human race and its bloodline, BEFORE it became completely corrupted by the Nephilim giants. This is an important point because many people today continue to point to the flood, mistakenly,  as “proof” that God is cruel and angry with humanity all the time, willing to just kill millions of people on a whim. However the Biblical truth is that God sent the flood to PRESERVE humanity and to make sure we could still receive the promised Redeemer who could save our souls! Without Jesus Christ, there is no hope! There is no future! There is no forgiveness! That's what Satan wanted to take away from us....our hope, our Savior, our Redeemer. Satan wanted every person to spend eternity in hell. But the flood was God’s way to keep that hope for ALL people and to thwart the efforts of Satan.

Satan is relentless in his quest to corrupt and destroy you. And if he cannot get to you, he will happily enter your life through a child, friend or family member.   Ephesians 4:22-27 states:
“That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness…Neither give place to the devil.” God permitted the Nephilim gene to make it on to the ark because of human sin. However, from my studies and research, I have not found a reference or inference to the Nephilim cohabiting with human women again! Now does that mean that in "the days of Noah" that God won't permit it to happen again? NO! It just means it was never mentioned again but deductive reasoning allows for us to conclude that if God allowed the gene to make it on the ark, then He would also have a reason for that permission. We can never forget the role we play in human affairs. If we sin, they we will be judged. If we do not follow God’s ways, then we invite sin inside with its inevitably destructive force.  Ham was not a follower of God and he was judged for his sinful rebellion via his wife. We are renewed in the spirit when we have salvation in Jesus Christ. And we are not to leave any space in our lives for Satan to enter.  Satan entered the space of the ark because Ham invited him.


We need to look at Noah and the world he was living in. There were giants walking around the Earth warring with nations, angels openly being revealed and being worshiped as gods and all sorts of supernatural activities were taking place. Noah’s family was well aware of this supernatural happenings and that it was definitely rooted in the satanic realm, hence Noah being a “preacher of righteousness.” Ham rejected God’s righteousness and God’s ways to forge his own. This was solely Ham’s fault. James 1:12-15 outlines the process of sin in one’s heart: “Blessed is the man that endure temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempt he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.Then when lust hath conceived, it bring forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bring forth death.”

So can we see any likenesses in our days to the days of Noah? Can we see the wickedness and evil? Can we see how humanity is giving many places to the devil and inviting him in? Take a look at the daily news. You will see wickedness pervading our society on a daily basis. Watch the television and see what kind of entertainment is offered. Full of illicit sexual practices, innuendos and perversity that go well beyond what our society and culture needs to continue to be exposed to. We see, and our children are exposed to daily, sexual promiscuity that has become so prevalent that our young people accept it as the norm of their days. Who's behind that? Satan. Even the commercials, which used to be funny, entertaining and informative, are now laced with sex, seduction and symbolic messages. God gave us a great gift of procreation. Sex was meant to be a union between a husband and wife where they would experience being joined together as one.  God saw it as a beautiful thing, however, man reduced it to recreation. It's no longer something to be treasured as a gift between husband and wife and to be celebrated on the wedding night; it has now become nothing more than pleasure, perversity, power and money. There are even those who try to justify pedophilia as a “spirit marriage.”

What about the drug problem that has infiltrated our society? We know how devastating it is and its dark forces that have destroyed many lives, along with those who loved them. Young people no longer have to buy from a dealer on the street; they can just raid their parents’ bathroom cabinet, buy it over the counter disguised as energy enhancers and find ways on the internet to make their own, and often times deadly, highs. Then they mix it with hard liquor just to make sure the effect kicks in quicker, is a dangerous concoction. Alcohol is just as much a drug as illegal and prescription drugs are. It's just as damaging too. Alcohol however is the societal drug of choice. It's promoted to the masses as such and since it's “legal” then more consume it in excess! More alcoholics surface and that begets another drug addiction. There are more addictions in this age than ever before. Why can't we stamp out the drug trade including alcohol? Well, I think it's because there is too much money involved and too much money to be made. Nothing seems to be enough! And in the days of Noah....

According to Genesis 6:5,  God saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth.  I hate to even contemplate this but does wickedness run as rampant today as it did throughout the earth then? We need to look upon God’s creation and the moral fiber of the people who inhabit this earth, and ask honestly if we are pleasing God? Look at the 55 million, and counting, abortions that are performed because of greed, convenience and irresponsibility since the decision of Roe vs Wade was written. We dare not murder children such as those who were offered as a sacrifice in the fire to Molech, but we have no problem aborting them because of an inconvenience. What used to be considered bad is now considered good and termed a "choice." This is not pleasing to the One who created that unborn child and gave as a gift to the parents who chose to end it's life. Can this act be FORGIVEN? Absolutely! Ask, repent and turn from your sinful ways! Every sin can be FORGIVEN and forgotten, covered by the blood of Jesus! Can we see the love of money corrupting our lives?  Our desire for instant gratification, for funding purchases we can't afford, is bankrupting our nation and our families. People are now routinely living beyond their means but it is not always because they want the new car or the new plasma screen TV.  It's because nothing is ever enough. They want the same as their “neighbors” and will sacrifice the wrong things to gain those material possessions at the cost of their families, their friends and their relationship to the Almighty God!

In closing, the earth in Noah’s day was filled with violence.  As you read the news or watch cable news networks, what do you see? Violence is filling our screens, inundating our minds and being crammed down our throats.  We not only see it in society, but in many ways, we celebrate it.  By that, I mean, a good action packed movie will reap millions of hard earned dollars as people pour into the theaters by the droves to celebrate this type of entertainment. A novel is written and is sold out, emptying the shelves, that's full of darkness, violence and terror. Music is reaping millions that celebrate violence against women, children, animals and each other. That's celebrating it because when you give your money to it, you support it, whether it's known, not known or intended. Supporting it is the same as doing it. Look at the  sport that is gaining popularity in America. It's a phenomenon call “Ultimate Fighting.” This is a violent, angry and rageful “sport” that has absolutely no rhyme or reason aside from pure “entertainment” value for a violent-frenzy society. I believe there is a rage, a hunger, and anger that is pent up in this country, and around the world, that finds an outlet through violent sports, television shows, movies, music and video games. We haven't reached the extent seen at the times of the gladiatorial games in Rome, but we still have our own violent outlets. This is from a deprived, over stimulated and disconnected society.


Jesus said that it would be like the days of Noah. In the days of Noah, the earth was filled with violence and corruption.  The earth today is filled with violence and it is thoroughly corrupt. It is now as it was then. Breaking it down this way:
A) These days are evil days: Ephesians 5:16: “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”

1. Marriage is abused
2. The wicked rule
3. Violence prevails
4. Men are corrupt and corrupting
5. God is certainly grieved by this

B) These days are dark days: II Timothy 3:13, “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” 

1. It is a time of apostasy
2. The Word is rejected
3. Sin is conquering the world and religious institutions
4. Our world as we know it is appointed for destruction as referenced in II Peter 3:7

C) These days are trying days: II Peter 2:9, “The Lord know how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:”

1. People are indifferent (Matthew 24:12 and Rev 3:1)
2. The work is difficult (1Thessalonians 1:3)
3. The results are discouraging (Luke 13:23 and 18:8)
4. The outcome is horrifying (II Peter 3:10- “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”)

“Noah was told by God to “pitch it,” to “cover” the box inside and outside with pitch. The word to pitch is kapar. It means to cover. This is the only word used in the Bible for – are you ready for this? For atonement. It is used in the Tenach (O.T.) 69 times to mean atonement. When sins are covered they must be atoned for. It has to do with a redemptive price, a ransom, to cleanse, forgive, be merciful or pardon, to pitch, purge away or reconcile. When sins are covered they must be atoned for. 

The stuff with which Noah was to “cover” the box was a kind of bitumen which is a black oily viscous material that is a by-produce of decomposed organic material, which when mixed with other materials makes it a sealant. It was also used as building mortar or adhesive. Research says it was used by Neanderthal men to waterproof canoes 40,000 years ago. Who knew? The stuff is also used in part of the mummification process. But what’s important here is not about the stuff, but about the matter of it being a covering which is where the revelation is.

If Noah had just built the boat and not “covered” it, the boat, or box, would have made those on the ark just as vulnerable as those who perished, because it was the “covering” that kept the water from overtaking them. Said another way, it was the covering or the atonement that kept them from perishing, not the box. Do you see, that without the covering of the blood of Yeshua, without His atonement on our behalf, we would be just as vulnerable to the wrath of God against sin as those who were “swept away”?! Consider that the word of God is the box, the ark. But without the atonement, the word is just a box and will not keep us from the wrath of God. It is the covering of the blood of Yeshua that preserves us from judgment and being “swept away” from His presence.

If there is a message in the story of Noah, it is this: That we must keep ourselves from the ungodliness that may go on in our day, that we must believe God’s Word even when all around us disregard it, and that God has covered us with His mercy, by the atoning blood of Yeshua if we are truly His, and that we are exempt from the wrath of God even if it’s happening right in front of us. How can we but bow before Him with reverent and grateful hearts of worship?"
