Will You Be Ready When The Lights Go Out?

Isaiah 14:24, "The LORD Almighty has sworn, "Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will stand."

Romans 8:28, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose."

Proverbs 3:25-26, "Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared."

His Love for Us
It's been nearly 7 months since my car accident and although I have been spared from death at this moment, I still am dealing with some residual side effects of the incident. It wasn't my time to go home to be with my Maker but the Almighty God sure had His protective hand on me during that moment in time! Head trauma is a scary thing! Every so often I will reflect on my experience because with all intents and purposes, with the traumatic kind of impact I had, I really should have been injured a lot worse than I was and have been praising the good Lord above every day since! It really could have been a lot worse. Even some of the techs at the emergency room commented the same. Yes, indeed, it could have been worse. I glanced at the photos I was able to take while still in shock, awaiting the moments out in confusion as all of the lights from the emergency vehicles were slowly dimming and leaving the scene. I cringed!

For those who haven't read that entry, I was at a complete stop behind a vehicle that was in the process of turning and just as it completed it's turn, I felt this horrible, sickening impact from behind which threw my head back so hard, it not only literally knocked the breath right out of me, making me gasp, but it also knocked me out cold! My head bent the head rest back slightly from the blow of the impact. My HEAD! My mom always said I was hard headed.....there's proof! Anyway, the kid wasn't paying attention and no time to brake, crashing into my car from behind, full speed. It pushed my trunk in, bent the frame, the lid of the trunk was all the way to the windshield, as was the front of his pick up truck! It wasn't a fender bender. And because I was at a stop and he was going full speed, it had twice the velocity as it would have had if both of us were moving.

To reiterate how that morning went going into work, it was one of those mornings that I felt totally compelled to pray and talk to the Lord. I did that the entire time....and shortly before the accident I had prayed for His hand of protection over me, for Him to use me in the way He needed to and to let me be a witness! Little did I know what was soon to happen! But maybe in some small way I already sensed it was going to happen because of the fervent and urgent prayer of protection I began to pray for myself! I was spared from seeing it happen or seeing it coming. My head was slightly turned to the left, and in my neurosurgeon's words, “Had your head been turned just a millimeter more to the right it could have been a broken neck, paralyzing you or worse....death.” How sobering is that statement! The Holy Spirit prompted me to pray for my own protection just SECONDS before it happened and I followed the lead. I had injuries, blood on my brain, neck, arm, elbow and residual memory issues, but only one fractured finger. The ONLY bone that was broken...my left ring finger and it healed before it was ever taken care of because everyone else was focusing on my head and neck. The Lord revealed a pre-existing cyst in the middle of my brain through this accident that was completely and miraculously healed! I believe in His Healing hand and through that experience, even my neurosurgeon was baffled. I wasn't. I knew how that disappeared. People have accidents everyday. Countless lives have been lost. Serious, and life threatening, life altering injuries, have been sustained in accidents less severe than mine. I don't know why I was spared, but I was. However, I was also ready when the lights went out.....

God Loves Us
Most people go through life never thinking that their life could change in a blink of an eye. Thousands of people have been severely injured or have lost their lives from car accidents. But car accidents aren't the only  way that our earthly lives can change or be gone forever. Heart attacks, other kinds of accidents, crimes and a host of other things. Why was I saved from serious injury or death in this car mishap, and so many others were not? Why others survive tragedies while others don't will remain a mystery to me, but that really doesn't matter in the end. What really matters, is not that these things exist or may happen to any of us at any given moment, but that we are READY to go home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ when the lights do go out! As apostasy begins to reign supreme in this fallen world and the Church age is winding down to a halt, millions of people are running around without giving much thought of tomorrow, let alone the next instant. Our next breath is never guaranteed to us or our loved ones. So many people live their lives on a daily basis as though they will live forever. Well, there is some truth to that actually, because we will all live forever, either with Jesus Christ in Heaven or apart from Him in hell. Our loving God gave us that choice!

For those of us who know Jesus as our personal Savior, we have that peace in knowing where we chose to spend eternity. For those of you who haven't made that choice but you're reading this right now, it's not by accident that you have been brought to this site, to this article and it's not too late. If you haven't made the choice just know that your life can change in a millisecond, without warning, without giving you a second chance! Matthew 28:20 tells us something so beautiful from our Lord, “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” We go through life mostly never giving thought to what's going to happen in the next second just as I wasn't giving thought to what was about to happen to me. I was thinking about what my day at work held for me....and in that second of prayer....I don't remember caring what that day at work COULD have held for me. It didn't matter. Don’t take your life for granted. It's a gift from God, but some day there will be a reckoning for what we've done with that life. If our life has been given to Jesus the Savior by our faith and trust in Him, we are given the blessed hope and promise of a home in Heaven with Him for eternity. We are also assured, as the verse above states, that He is with us through all we may go through while upon this earth. He is not only our Redeemer, but He is also our Strength. He is our Life.

Most of us have read, and love, the Psalm of David - Psalm 23! Here rests the answer to all that we are looking for and I will close with it now.....

Psalm 23:
1) The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
2) He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
3) He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
4) Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5) You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
6) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever and ever Amen!
